Thank you to our Teaching & Learning Coaches!

TLC The Hudson City School District has benefited from the work of five Teaching and Learning Coaches, supported through the Strengthening Teacher and Leader Effectiveness (STLE) grant from the New York State Education Department.

These teachers were chosen to coach their peers in particular areas of curriculum and instruction. Teachers Beth Barnes (mathematics), Julie Coryell (English as a Second Language), Kim Del Principe (technology instruction), Marlena Peduzzi (data), and Lucy Rees (technology integration) served as TLCs for the 2014-15 school year. They led professional development sessions, offered feedback on their peers’ lessons, taught model lessons, served on a number of committees, and did academic research to enrich their colleagues’ instructional theory and practice.

School Improvement Coordinator April Prestipino says that she has seen teachers in the district make positive changes as a result of the program. “Teachers have been more collaborative with each other, and their lessons have been more student-centered thanks to our TLCs,” she says. “We see more teachers taking risks, volunteering to facilitate professional development, and sharing their expertise with their colleagues.” The district has enjoyed the grant for two school years. Although the STLE grant is expiring, the coaching role will continue into next year.
