Dads Take Your Child to School Day is a big success

Dads Take Your Child to School DayThe Montgomery C. Smith Intermediate School held its second annual Dads Take Your Child to School Day on Tuesday, September 16. The event included a special breakfast to honor the male caregivers in students’ lives.

About 250 fathers, grandfathers, other relatives and friends were present to eat bagels and pastries with their young loved ones, and to get to know one another. “The turnout today speaks volumes about the sense of community being fostered in our buildings. With schools and families working together, we can lead our students onto pathways where they can be academically and socially successful,” said Superintendent Maria Suttmeier.

Also present were Senator Kathy Marchione and Assemblymember Didi Barrett, who spoke to the crowd about the importance of male caregivers in their children’s education. The Senator and Assemblymember greeted men and children as they mingled in line waiting to get breakfast.

Principal Mark Brenneman was instrumental in putting the event together and publicizing it to the community. “It couldn’t mean more to us as a school to have this level of involvement from parents and the community.”

The event stems off of a statewide initiative from the Office of Child and Family Services that aims to promote fatherly involvement in education. “Today’s event at M.C. Smith was phenomenal! The Dads represented in full force, and there was a sea of smiles from children all over the place,” said Robert Williams, who leads the event for the Capital Region. Research shows that fatherly involvement in schools is associated with better academic, behavioral, and social outcomes for children.

Brenneman thanked Williams, as well as Senator Marchione, Assemblymember Barrett, Mayor Hallenbeck, Superintendent Suttmeier, his staff, and most importantly, male caregivers for their continuous engagement with their children’s education and well-being.
