MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS EXCEL IN ATTENDANCE
The staff at Montgomery C. Smith Middle School believes that students who are most successful academically, socially, and emotionally are those who attend school on a daily basis. That being said, all of us at M.C. Smith Middle School would like to commend the following for the role they have played in their attendance this year. Upon reviewing our records, we noticed that these are the student’s who attended 95% or more of his or her scheduled instructional period since the beginning of school. This is something everyone should be proud of! Once again, CONGRATULATIONS!

MIDDLE SCHOOL VISITS COLUMBIA COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE
On June 10, 2008, the Hudson Middle School visited the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. With an invitation from Sheriff David Harris, students from Mr. Pratt’s 6th Grade class enjoyed an in-depth tour of the office’s new communications facility.
Hosted by Lieutenant Jim Andrews and Lieutenant Thom Lanphear, the students enjoyed seeing firsthand the various operations within the facility including administrative offices,
technology involved in responding and tracking emergency calls, officer training, protective gear and tools used during jail disturbances, booking area/holding cell as well as the kitchen that provides meals for all of the staff and inmates.
At the end, the students participated in a conference room style discussion where they met and talked with various Sheriff Department members including officers who had been pen pals with the students over the past year. The visit ended with group and pen pal photographs of all officers and students.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
In March, Ms. Doto's Science classes toured the Greenport Land Conservation Area. They investigated the new "yellow trail" for signs of animal life. Among their many discoveries were honey bee hives, praying mantis cocoons, red-tailed hawk nests, male turkey scat, and turtle egg shells. Did you know that grey foxes can climb trees?
The middle of the hike provided a unique view of Hudson at the river.
This nature hike was a follow-up lesson on animal tracking provided by the Columbia Land Conservancy. The students participated in classroom lessons on animals found right here in Hudson. They learned about how animals live, eat and excrete. They felt real animal furs and made plaster casts of actual animal tracks.
