Public Art Memorial - Circle of Angels
Hudson Middle School, JLE, and Greenport students, staff, and parents, under the direction of 7/8th grade Art teacher Chuck Peters, placed a circle of flags on the front lawn of the Middle School Wednesday, September 10, 2008, to commemorate the 7th anniversary of the attacks of September, 11, 2001. When the 60 foot diameter circle was completed it had a total of 3144 flags each representing a person who died that day. All the classes at the HMS where invited to experience the piece in their own way, (talking, writing, creating art, etc…).
Individuals who participated were: Chuck, Carol, Alexis and Ethan Peters, Lynn MacGowan, Carly Martin, Tom Popow, Stephanie, Emily, and Matthew Haigh, Nick Ganey, Wayne Kinney, Shelby Rideout, Cindy Rivenburgh, Lisa and Brian Dwyer, Alaja Ocasio, Beionca Smith, Amber Craver, Cory and Hannah Jepson, Kulton McCall, and photos documentation was taken by Frank Martin Jr.
Students involved in the take down of the exhibit on September 12, 2008 were talked to about the memorial and respect for each of the flags. It became a type of ceremony of respect.
