Montgomery C. Smith Elementary School

M.C. Smith Elementary School held an early open house on August 29th to allow parents a chance to see the new primary wing before school opens. Construction and cleaning are finishing up, and we will be ready to welcome our students to the new M.C. Smith Elementary School on Wednesday, September 5, 2018.

Below is important information about parent drop off/pick up, school breakfast, visitor procedures, and more.

Save the Dates

Tuesday, September 26, 2018 – Dads Take Your Child to School breakfast (7 a.m.)

Wednesday, September 27, 2018 – Meet the Teacher Night (time to be announced)

New Procedure for School Visitors

This year, the district is introducing a new visitor management system called School Gate Guardian.

Beginning in September 2018, all school visitors are required to provide photo identification (i.e., driver’s license, state-issued ID card) to enter the building. The School Gate Guardian system will scan visitor IDs to check for sex offender status and/or any type of parental custody issues (such as partial custody or no custody). The system will also help us identify approved individuals so you can be assured we are placing your children in the proper hands.

If you have questions about School Gate Guardian or how to update your child's custody information, please call the MCSES Main Office at 518-828-4360, ext. 1112.

Morning Drop Off Procedures

Free breakfast is provided to all students in the district, no application required. We serve breakfast every day of the school year, starting at 7 a.m. (times may change depending on weather delays).

Parents/guardians can drop off starting at 7 a.m. Drop off for all students (K-5) will occur in the front of the building, facing Harry Howard Avenue. The back area is for bus transportation ONLY. Students who ride the bus will arrive through the back of the building.

There will be aides outside to help all students get to the right place. Signs will be posted around the building for the first week of school. Students who are dropped off will assemble in the following areas for the first three days of school:

  • Gr. K-1 will go to the new gym
  • Gr. 2-3 will go to the old gym
  • Gr. 4-5 will go to the auditorium

A map of the entrance and exit to the school is posted below to illustrate the new parking lot and traffic flow. All traffic will exit onto Harry Howard Avenue.

Afternoon Pick Up Procedures

Regular dismissal is at 2:41 p.m. and students will be available for pickup at 2:45 p.m. Afterschool Program pick up will begin at 3 p.m. by the cafeteria entrance (back of building, see map above).

No parents/guardians will be able to enter the building prior to dismissal. There will be no student pick up between 2:30 p.m. and dismissal.

Pick up for all students (K-5) will occur in the atrium that connects the new primary wing (located in the front of the building, see map above). In the atrium, aides will be present for parents/guardians to sign out their children.

To summarize, if you are picking up your student(s) at regular dismissal:

  • Enter through the front atrium (see map above)
  • Staff will be there for you to sign out your student
  • Student will be brought to the atrium to meet you

Students in Kindergarten and 1st grade will wait in the new gym for afternoon pick up. Students in Grades 2-5 will wait in the auditorium.

If there are changes to your student’s dismissal plans, please be sure to notify the office by 12 noon (518-828-4360, ext. 1112).

School Name Change

On July 2, 2018, the Hudson City School District Board of Education passed a resolution to change the school name from Montgomery C. Smith Intermediate School (MCSIS) to Montgomery C. Smith Elementary School (MCSES).* This change reflects the addition of a primary wing, which will bring our entire elementary community under one roof (Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 5).

Beginning in the 2018-2019 school year, students in Grades K-1 will attend school at the Montgomery C. Smith Elementary School in the newly constructed primary wing (102 Harry Howard Avenue, Hudson). Children entering pre-kindergarten in September 2018 will also attend school in the new primary wing at M.C. Smith Elementary.
