Hudson Middle School Principal Ryan Groat
Principal of the John L.Edwards' School,

Carol Gans, reads with students.

As a primary school, John L. Edwards is a child’s first formal introduction to public school. We believe that education starts before birth and that early experiences can contribute to a child’s success in school. To that end, we have an active family literacy program and work collaboratively with childcare agencies and pre-schools in the area.

When your child enters school for the first time, we will meet with you about your child and give you the opportunity to share any information about his or her characteristics and needs. This will help us in making an appropriate teacher placement.  Parent orientation sessions and open houses during kindergarten screening may also help both you and your child feel more comfortable as you begin your school journey.

The staff and community of our elementary school believe that every child is a unique and special individual who will learn. We believe that it is our responsibility to serve as facilitators for the nurturing and developing of every child’s maximum potential: academically, physically, socially and emotionally. We are committed to providing opportunities which will assist students in making self-directed, realistic, and responsible decisions when solving problems that may confront them in our ever changing world.

Ultimately, each student will gain from school according to the effort s/he applies. To increase the degree of educational success, it is very important that teachers, parents and administrators communicate openly and frequently concerning the progress of students.

Our curriculum is in close alignment with New York State Learning Standards and teachers at each grade level  meet frequently to review and assess curriculum and plans. They also meet across grade levels and with their colleagues at Greenport to insure continuity.

Our reading support staff meets several times a year to review progress of individual children and determine what further interventions or change in program may need to occur.

Our very active PTA, led by president, Michelle Bowes, hosts several major events throughout the year.  Please watch for our web link to PTA, and in the meantime, events will be posted in the JLE News Flash. We encourage you to take the time to read it. Not only does it keep you informed of what is happening at school, it also lets you know what is happening in the community for children and families.

Our web site is a work in progress and will be updated frequently. Please check often and explore our various links. We look forward to your being an active part of the JLE community.
