Joint Intervention Team review
Commissioner’s Regulations Part 100.2 requires a Joint Intervention Team (JIT) review for schools identified as Restructuring. The Montgomery C. Smith Intermediate School was consequently reviewed in January of this year by a team of eight specialists from the State Education Department and Capital Area School Development Association led by Outside Educational Expert, Dr. James Butterworth.
Dr. Butterworth gave a presentation of the JIT’s findings and recommendations at the April 24, 2012 board of education meeting. A copy of the final report is available for your information. The findings and recommendations must be addressed by the school in the implementation of the Restructuring Plan for 2012-13.
Although the report uncovers many areas in need of improvement, Dr. Butterworth emphasized that there are many great things happening at the MCSIS as well as across the district. We are one district and whenever any one of our schools are under review, we are all affected. We must work together to be supportive of the challenges that lie ahead and look for ways to become part of the solution. Read the final report...

Parent/Guardian Notification Letter – District In Need of Improvement
The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001 requires all school districts to meet high academic standards as set by each state. Each school, in each district, must improve every year until all students meet these standards. This yearly improvement is called Annual yearly Progress (AYP). The status of schools and districts which receive Title I funds are reviewed in this manner every year.
The Hudson City School District was formally notified that it is a District In Need of Improvement (DINI) as a result of insufficient improvement (failure to make AYP) on New York State exams for English language arts (ELA) at both the elementary/middle and secondary instructional levels.
