Hudson Student Earns Statewide Scholarship

Hudson High School student Yasmin P. Martinez received a $2,500 scholarship at the Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (PR/HYLI) Student Recognition Dinner on April 27.

PR/HYLI is an annual statewide program designed to promote and develop leadership and public speaking skills in Hispanic high school students. Two hundred students traveled to Albany for a firsthand look at the state legislative process. Students met with legislators and participated in a mock legislative session in the New York State Assembly chambers.

A member of the Capital Region delegation, Martinez was one of only two $2,500 scholarship winners across New York State. The scholarships, from Health Plus, are given to two students who have exhibited outstanding leadership skills.

To earn the scholarship Martinez had to submit a 200-250 word essay in either English or Spanish that addressed the question “What do you believe are the major challenges in becoming a Latino/a leader in contemporary American society. Students also had to submit three letters of recommendation.

Martinez, who will attend SUNY New Paltz, enjoyed the experience in Albany.

"This weekend has been among the most amazing moments of my life. I am so glad I did PHRYLI, and look forward to keeping in touch with all the kids from my delegation and from the conference. My scholarship will go towards my freshman year at New Paltz,” said Martinez.

Twenty $500 scholarships were also awarded to students on behalf of the State Senate/Assembly Puerto Rican and Hispanic Task Force.

PR/HYLI is sponsored by the State Senate/Assembly Puerto Rican and Hispanic Task Force in conjunction with the annual Somos El Futuro Legislative Conference. Questar III coordinates the leadership institute as part of a five-year contract awarded by the New York State Education Department.
