Getting to Know You

Shawn MesickShawn Mesick

Mr. Shawn Mesick is a cafeteria manager at the Hudson City School District.

Here are a few things to help you get to know Mr. Mesick:

What is your role here at HCSD, and where do you work?
I am the Cafeteria Manager at John L. Edwards Primary School. I manage staff, inventory, sales, cashier, correspond with vendors, purchase all of our food, cook, interact with students and faculty, help in kitchen as needed and much more.

When did you start working at HCSD?
I started here at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year, during the second week of September.

What do you like most about your job?
I enjoy working with my staff and nourishing little minds. The kids are our future and without a delicious and nutritious meal, it is hard for a child to stay focused in class. It is imperative for young learning minds to have a well-balanced meal, and I am proud to help provide and be a part of that experience for them.

What is your education background?
I went to Pace University in Pleasantville, NY for two years and Schenectady Culinary for one year. I have been managing and cooking professionally since 2003.

What is your background like – previous jobs?
I first started with Empire Lunch Company, LLC, which is a take-out breakfast and lunch quick service restaurant that I designed and built in 2003. I worked at it and was successful for about three years. I then sold it to another owner/operator. After that, I was self-employed for a few more years with my own house painting business.

Since 2010, I have worked as a food service professional in a few different school districts, as well as a food service management company, Whitsons Culinary Group. Before coming to Hudson, I spent time working at Albany City High School, Schenectady City School District and Averill Park Central School District.

Even though I really enjoy working as a food service professional in school districts, I continue to carry a DBA (“doing business as”) for my painting company, Mesick Enterprises, allowing me to do other work when school is not in session.

What are your interests outside of school?
I love to travel to different places and dine out. I enjoy hunting, fishing, ATV riding and going to my house in Indian Lake, NY to kayak in the Great ADK (Adirondacks).

What is the best advice anyone has given you?
Never take anything for granted.

What is your motto or personal mantra?
Try to be positive as much as you can. With all the stuff going on today, it is hard to do this but it is important to try. Positive behavior brings good things to that individual. I have had some real trying times in my life but staying focused and saying a little prayer never hurt anyone.
