Ms. Laura Morrissey is an English as a New Language (ENL) teacher who started at the Hudson City School District in January 2017.
Here are a few things to help you get to know Ms. Morrissey:
What is your role here at HCSD, and where do you work?
I am an ENL (English as a New Language) teacher at both the Junior High and High Schools.
When did you start working at HCSD?
I began working at HCSD in mid-January 2017.
What do you like most about your job?
I like that every day brings a new beginning. There is always something new to learn and discover which always makes it interesting!
What is your education background?
I am a lifelong learner. I always enjoyed school, and to this day, I am always seeking new knowledge to better myself as a teacher. I got my undergraduate degree in Spanish from SUNY Albany. After completing my education in Albany I moved to New York City where I got my Master’s Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I have been teaching ever since!
What is your background like – previous jobs?
I have been teaching since 2012. I have taught in Brooklyn, Pearl River and now Hudson, NY. I have worked with students from all over the world, which has been a FANTASTIC experience. You can learn so much about the world by simply asking others about where they come from and what their different values are. I wouldn’t change my job for the world.
What are your interests outside of school?
I love to be outdoors. I like to go hiking, swimming, biking and camping.
What is the best advice anyone has given you?
“If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. If you don’t step forward, you’re always in the same place.” - Nora Roberts
My sister once sent this quote to me and I have found it to inspire me. It keeps me motivated when I’m nervous about big changes.
What is your motto or personal mantra?
Laughter is contagious!
