Getting to Know You

Heather Holmes (Feller)

Ms. Feller, as she is known by her current students, is an elementary teacher who returned to the Hudson City School District in September 2017. She got married this past summer, so starting in the 2018-19 school year she will go by "Mrs. Holmes."

Here are a few things to help you get to know Ms. Feller/Mrs. Holmes:

What is your role here at the Hudson City School District, and where do you work?
I am a fourth grade classroom teacher at Montgomery C. Smith Intermediate School.

When did you start working at here?
This is my second time as a “new teacher” at Hudson. I first started teaching at Hudson in September 2009 as a third grade teacher. I was able to loop with my same class and taught fourth grade the following year. Due to unfortunate budget cuts, I was laid off from my position for a few years and taught in another district. Now, I'm back—close to home and teaching in the same school I once attended as a child. This is my eighth year as an elementary school teacher.

What do you like most about your job?
Every day is different. Some days are much more challenging than others. But the simple fact of having the ability to make a difference in children’s lives is very rewarding. I also enjoy working with my colleagues and developing new friendships.

What is your education background?
I attended SUNY Oneonta for my undergraduate studies and received a Bachelor's Degree in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) with a concentration in Mathematics. I continued my education at The College of Saint Rose, where I earned my Master's Degree in Literacy (Birth-6th grade).

What is your background like – previous jobs?
Over the summer, I serve as the Director of the Greenport Recreation Program at the Town Park. I have been working with the kids in our community for over 14 years at this program. Before returning to my teaching position at Hudson, I had the opportunity to teach fourth grade students in the Chatham Central School District.

What are your interests outside of school?
Outside of work I enjoy spending time with family and friends. I have seven nieces and nephews that keep me entertained, along with a wild and crazy eight-month-old puppy named Remi.

Tell us a bit about your life outside of work (e.g., hobbies, interests, family).
I like to consider myself an easy-going person and am always up for any kind of adventure. I like to travel and explore different places. One of my all-time favorite places to visit is Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I also enjoy spending time outdoors—whether it be working in the yard, fishing, sitting by a campfire, or camping itself.

What is the best advice anyone has given you?
"The best leaders lead by example."

As part of a job, it’s important to inspire others to do the right thing, but it's more important to show them the way by doing it yourself.

What is your motto or personal mantra?
"Never give up."
