Mrs. Sierra Burt is a new sixth-grade teacher at Hudson Junior High School. Mrs. Burt teaches STEAM, which adds art and design to STEM curriculum (science, technology, engineering and math).

Here are a few things to help you get to know Mrs. Burt:

What is your role here at the Hudson City School District, and where do you work?
I am a sixth-grade teacher at the Junior High School.

When did you start working in the district?
This is my first year at HCSD and I am very excited to be here!

What does your job entail?
I teach STEAM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. It is a new class that integrates all these subjects and encourages students to think critically about real-world problems.

What do you like most about your job?
I love teaching a class that uses hands-on learning to explore course concepts. There is a lot of creativity involved and I enjoy seeing the students explore and be innovative. It’s really exciting to see them work together!

What is your education background?
I have a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences from Russell Sage College. My courses focused on Mathematics, Biology and Psychology. I also have a Master of Science in Childhood Education and I am certified to teach children from birth to Grade 6 in New York State.

What is your background like – previous jobs?
I taught Pre-Kindergarten through a program collaboration with Saugerties Central Schools. I also worked as an Early Intervention Provider for a few years in Ulster and Dutchess counties.

Tell us a bit about your life outside of school.
I spend most of my time with my family, which includes my husband, Bryan, and our three daughters, Marlee, Raina and Sylvie. The girls tend to keep me busy, but I enjoy playing volleyball and golf whenever I have some free time!

What is the best advice anyone has given you?
“Do good.” My grandfather would always say this to us. He told us it meant we should always try our best and be good to people.

What is your motto or personal mantra?
Go with the flow.
