Finding Success in the Ring and in the Classroom
“I want to have goals,” said Michael Black, an 11th grade student in the Alternative Learning Program. Michael’s goals include improving his skills on the football field, where he is a defensive end for the Blue Hawks, on the track, where he runs the 200 and the 400, and in the boxing ring, where he has earned Golden Glove status.
ALP Principal Mr. Tom Gavin and 11th grader Michael Black
“Boxing has been great for me,” said Michael. “It’s helped me stay out of trouble and keeps me focused on what I need to do at school.”
Michael credits his academic success with the Alternative Learning Program’s one-on-one attention and extra time he spends with teachers. “I like coming to school here. I like the teachers.”
Michael’s favorite subject is social studies. Michael’s social studies teacher, Mr. Jason Courrege has helped him discover how studying history can benefit his future. “Mr. Courrege told me a little bit about the history of Ali – that got me into history.”
Michael is looking forward to graduation next year and plans on attending college. Michael also plans on pursuing a career in the ring and in construction, where he is currently enrolled in the Career Technical Education construction program.

I would like to thank everyone for consistently going above and beyond on a daily basis. It is amazing how successful students can be once they understand it’s within their grasp and are willing to put forth the effort. The seed of self-esteem and confidence had bloomed nicely in the Alternative Learning Program.
Two years ago Marilyn Barry presented this opportunity to help the students of HCSD. On behalf of everyone here, thank you Marilyn.

ALP EARTH DAY CELEBRATION
Once again the ALP students lead the way. This time our students and staff organized and participated in an Earth Day celebration. ALP students were bussed to Oakdale where they cleaned up around the entire park, painted picnic tables, and planted flowers around the lake house. Other ALP students and staff cleaned up around the ALP school area and along Maple Avenue. After the chores were completed, we had a cookout. The Hudson Youth Department donated the majority of the food items for the cookout. A special thank you to Trudy Beicht for all she has done for ALP. [Slideshow]

Students Work Together on Native American Presentation
Students in Mrs. Parmentier’s 4th grade class have been working with the 7th and 8th grade ALP computer students in the creation of a Native American PowerPoint presentation. The computer students have been creating slides for the presentation with the input from the 4th grade students on what they learned about the Native Americans. The computer students have
been showing the 4th grade students how to design and create slides by using pictures of their longhouses and including quotes about what they have learned. This collaborative project will soon be available for viewing upon its completion.

The Alternative Learning Program provides opportunity for Hudson City School District students to be successful in an alternative school setting. The school environment promotes tolerance of staff/student differences and fosters community spirit. Over the course of our first year, our students demonstrated their abilities both academically and behaviorally. Their success led to new motivation and hope for the future. Middle school and high school aged students can be referred through the guidance office.
